Using the Method
If you need help with any aspect of Photoshop, be sure to check out our Photoshop tutorials page. This week, we’re going to show you how to use Photoshop’s sticky tape tool to create a simple photo collage.
Photoshop’s sticky tape tool allows you to easily attach images or text together without having to use complicated gradients or fill paths. To get started, first open the image you want to use as a template and paste it into the document window. Next, select the sticky tape tool from the toolbar and click on the image you want to use as a guide. Drag the cursor around the edges of the image until it reaches the point where you want the sticky tape to attach. Release your mouse button and Photoshop will automatically place the sticky tape where you selected it.
To remove the sticky tape, just select it with your cursor and press delete (or ESC to exit out of the tool). You can also change the thickness of the tape by dragging one of its slider bars. Be sure to experiment with different settings until you find something that works best for your project.
Alternative Uses for Sticky Tape
If you’re like most people, you probably have a drawer full of sticky tapes in various colors and sizes. But there are other uses for sticky tape that you may not have thought of. Here are five ways to use sticky tape that you may not have known about:
1. Use it to secure supplies when painting or drawing. Just put the tape around the edge of the canvas or paper and then pull it tight. This will keep the paint or pencil from moving and making mistakes.
2. Use it to seal boxes. If you need to keep something closed but don’t want to use a label or duct tape, just use a piece of sticky tape. It’s easy to remove if you need to open the box later on.
3. Secure wires and cables together when you’re building a project. Just place the sticky tape around the wire or cable and then press it down firmly against the surface. This will keep everything together while you’re building the project, and it will be removable once your project is finished.
4. Keep your computer clean by using sticky tape to attach dust collectors to keyboards and monitors. This will help collect all of the dust that falls onto the surface. You can then use a vacuum cleaner to remove all of the dust that falls off the surface. The sticky tape will also help keep dust from collecting on your computer.
5. Use duct tape to hold light fixtures together when you’re building a project and don’t have any screws or nails handy. Just place the sticky tape around one of the fixture’s bulbs and then attach it to another fixture with a screw or nail. It will be secure once the project is finished, and you can remove it easily.
6. Use hair bands to cover loose cables that are sticking out of a box when you’re building a project. Just wrap one end around the cable, fold over some hair bands, and then tape them together using electrical tape ( see tip #8).
7. If your phone or iPod’s battery is running out of juice fast, put it back in its case and use duct tape to hold the battery cover shut. It will be easy to take it out, charge up the battery, remove the tape, and then put the cover back on. If you have a really fast-running gadget, you can even put a piece of electrical tape around the edge of the plastic case to help keep dirt from getting inside.
8. Use regular duct tape as an emergency ‘spackle’ when you are patching a wall with a drywall compound. Just apply some patching compound and then attach duct tape over it to make it more durable.
9. Cover holes in the carpet with duct tape. Duct tape can be used to tie up carpet edges when you are moving, or whenever there is a lack of carpet tape.
10. As an emergency patch on a tear in your jacket or shirt, duct tape can patch up a hole quickly and easily.
